Welcome to PWAC!
Welcome to the PWAC website. Whether you are a current member, a returning member, someone just checking out the page to see what PWAC is all about, or a student or non-fiction writer considering joining, we hope you will find what you’re looking for in our great association.
PWAC was founded in 1976, and in the 44 years of its existence as a Canadian National Arts Service Organization, has been a pillar of the Canadian writing community. I’m very pleased to be the president of PWAC, elected on August 9, 2019, at our annual general meeting in Calgary, Alberta. PWAC was there as a presenter of three distinct sessions about life as a Canadian non-fiction writer at the When Words Collide writers’ festival (WWC), and what a great experience that was.
PWAC has taken pride in our ability to network and form alliances with various groups in the writing community, and to advocate for writers’ rights whenever the opportunity arises. In 2018, we made two presentations in Ottawa before the House of Commons committees reviewing the Canadian Copyright Act. In 2018, we also held a joint conference with the Canadian Media Guild’s Freelance Branch in Toronto, and are now endeavouring to strengthen our relationship with CMG-Freelance as co-founders of the new Canadian Freelance Guild (CFG) which will launch April 1, 2020.
PWAC has always been a believer in collaboration and the strength in numbers. Sign up on our Join Us page so you can join the new CFG to help strengthen the collective voice of freelance creators across Canada.
You can learn more about our membership benefits here. They will be expanding and changing effective April 1st. Please bookmark this site to be sure to learn of new developments.
I look forward to meeting you at an event for Canadian writers over the coming year, and to hearing about your challenges and triumphs. Please feel feel to e-mail me directly at president@pwac.ca.
Cheers and best regards,
Doreen Pendgracs
